Application Instructions

If you apply online the Department will automatically receive a copy of the application. However, you will need to send separate copies of official, sealed transcripts along with a statement of purpose and three sealed letters of recommendation to the Department. Also, if you are applying for an assistantship you should enclose a completed assistantship application. GRE & TOEFL scores are required by the Department as well.

More Information on the TOEFL

The minimum TOEFL score required by the Graduate College of the University of Arizona is 550 (paper version), 213 (computer-based test) or 80 (iBT test).

You may be exempt from this requirement if:

  • You have completed 2 years of full-time, upper division academic study in the U.S.
  • You have received a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an institution in the U.S., English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand.

Current TOEFL scores may still be required if you’ve lived away from the English-speaking country where you earned your degree.

More Information on Transcripts

Each transcript must be issued and certified by the university or college which conferred the degree. It must contain an original stamp or seal and the signature of the appropriate party. It must be in the original language and accompanied by an English translation that is officially verified by the issuing institution.

What are we looking for?

When evaluating applicants the Graduate Admissions Committee looks at the whole picture:
  • Past academic performance and previous coursework
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Your statement of purpose
  • A strong mathematics background including three semesters of calculus and a course in linear algebra; a course in mathematical analysis is recommended, as well

Undergraduate Majors

Economists hail from a variety of backgrounds. In addition to economics majors, we encourage applications from mathematics majors, engineering majors, and students whose undergraduate majors were in the physical and biological sciences. These students will find that courses in intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and econometrics provide good preparation for the Economics Ph.D. program.
